Jeffree Star rose to fame on YouTube by posting makeup tutorials which, according to various outlets, earned him a whopping net worth of around $200 million. While many of the results from these payroll sites are to be taken with a pinch of salt, his line of cosmetics is successful and worth a pretty penny.
The YouTuber also impressed other successful influencers with the sheer amount of wealth in his possession. Who can forget how Shane Dawson rolled around in Stars’ pink Lamborghini and couldn’t stop expressing how charged the cosmetics guru was?
Star is also known for maintaining a fairly diversified investment portfolio. He said Dawson (according to Seventeen), “I own investment properties all over the world, I invest in the marijuana business. I own a complete shipping and fulfillment center, I own a merchandise company, I print and produce everything myself.”
While there’s certainly plenty of money to be made for top influencers on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, the real money-making is the business that can be empowered through one’s personal branding. dr Dre, for example, reportedly made $2.6 billion for Apple’s purchase of the Beats brand, dwarfing the amount of money he’s made in his music career alone.
Star needs to know that there are serious profit margins to be made in the livestock industry. The larger the cattle, the more care and land is required for their development, but theoretically the payout per cattle also increases.
Star goes into what could be described as a tailor-made meat business: he raises, butchers and sells yaks.
Yak meat has been compared to bison in terms of macronutrients. According to Cook Gem: “Compared to beef or bison, yak meat has a sweeter and more refined flavor…yak has higher moisture and iron levels, which means it’s often richer and lighter in flavor.” Its fat content is similar to that of bison or elk, making it a healthier alternative to beef…[it] has a comparable protein content and contains more vitamins and minerals.”
While there have been studies on the health benefits of eating yak over beef for a number of years, Star is probably one of the more prominent socialites to have associated himself with the animal as an alternative to red meat.
However, many have criticized his decision to enter the yak ranching business, particularly because his cosmetics line is 100% cruelty-free and vegan, according to Heal Label.
Most of the criticism, many said, came not from the fact that Star’s cosmetics are cruelty-free, but because he “didn’t make his intentions known from the start” when he decided to hang out with some yaks on a farm, so that he could recover from the stress of managing his many business ventures.
As it turned out, his yak relaxation “paradise” turned into another business venture.
Others stated that they see nothing wrong with what Star is doing and that the yaks on his ranch are likely to enjoy a better life than most other animals used as livestock on other properties.
The influencer opened an Instagram account for his yak farm called @staryakranch, where he posts updates about the animals and selfies he took with the yaks in 2021. However, he recently shared some of the products offered by his farm, including ground yak meat, yak steaks, and yak jerky.
