Jason Kubler seals another upset win as the rankings appear to be rising

The result counted for little as Britain had already booked their place in the Sydney city finals after finishing Group D unbeaten.

Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini defeated world No. 3 Casper Ruud to secure Italy’s spot in the United Cup city finals in Brisbane.

The world No. 16, who lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in last year’s Australian Open semifinals, used his powerful hold to dominate the Norwegian 6-4, 6-4.

Berrettini hit 10 aces and won 88 percent of the points (35 from 40) as he landed his first serve to go 2-0 after his tournament-opening loss to Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

His win in 86 minutes saw Italy beat Norway 3-0, good enough for top spot in the group with two games remaining.

In Sydney, Jessica Pegula prevailed 6-3, 6-2 against Germany’s Laura Siegemund to secure the tie 3-0 in a dead rubber. The United States had already booked their final spot in City against Team GB on Monday.

In Perth, Greece secured a city final as Maria Sakkari defeated Elise Mertens to take the last point they needed from the first of three chances in games against Belgium.

The world No. 6 won 6-1, 7-5 after Stefanos Tsitsipas impressively defeated David Goffin on Monday.

Tsitsipas says he is close to unlocking “Zen mode” on the tennis court and is physically prepared to outlast the sport’s rising stars to create another deep run at the Australian Open.

The Greek world No. 4 has reached the semi-finals in three of his last four Melbourne Park campaigns and started his season at the United Cup in Perth in impressive style.

“It’s a very nice place to be,” Tsitsipas said of his form against Goffin. “I wish I could be in this place more often.

“You can’t allow yourself to feel like God when you’re on the pitch unless you’ve reached that, shall we say, flow state, which happened to me a few times last season.

“I hope it will happen this season where you feel like everything is going your way and you don’t have to think anymore. It’s a very nice place to be… let’s call it the zen mode I’m looking for.”
