RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Rookie Seth Jarvis scored twice and Antti Raanta finished the game with 34 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Boston Bruins 5-1 on Tuesday night and in the first round playoff series to take a 3-2 lead.
Defensemen Jaccob Slavin and Tony DeAngelo scored first-half goals for the Hurricanes and Vincent Trocheck added an empty net.
No team has yet secured a road win in the series. It wasn’t nearly as far in this case either, as the Hurricanes played from the front and carried the action in a much cleaner performance than their flawed performances in Boston.
With the win in Game 5, the Hurricanes have two chances to take out the Bruins. Game 6 is Thursday in Boston and Game 7, if required, on Saturday on home ice.
Raanta was sharp all night, highlighted by stopping a left alone Brad Marchand at the top of the crease by going down and putting his left wrist on the puck in the first period. He carried a shutout midway through the third period when Connor Clifton scored in a rush to make it 4-1.
Then there was Jarvis, who had a tough game in Game 4 when he hit a puck in the groin on a slap shot from teammate Brendan Smith. He laughed it off earlier Tuesday, although he said he was still in pain from it.
Regardless, Jarvis was ready to scramble at the crease to set up his two goals. The first came when he was thrown onto the ice on the left by Brandon Carlo but spun his stick around to hit the puck – which struck the right skate of Boston’s Jake DeBrusk and fluttered over Jeremy Swayman to the net for a 3- to reach. 0 lead at 15:52 of the second.
He came through with another early in the third, reaching around Swayman to lock in a puck that had slipped under the net reducer and knocking it in at 3:31 of the third.
Carolina took a 2-0 lead with two strong home performances. But the Bruins regrouped on the home ice and capitalized on 14 Carolina penalties while the Hurricanes seemed to lose their composure by Game 4 and leveled the series.
This time around, the Hurricanes stayed outside the box (three penalties) to keep the game largely at their preferred even strength in a game with far less scuffles and post-whistle antics from both teams.
Swayman finished the game with 33 saves, including numerous big stops for the Bruins, and kept them close early when Carolina asserted control.
Boston had a surprise signing in defenseman Charlie McAvoy.
McAvoy was a late scratch for Sunday’s fourth game due to COVID-19 protocols, and coach Bruce Cassidy said earlier Tuesday that he would also miss Game 5. But McAvoy traveled down in the afternoon and was seen entering PNC Arena, then joined his team in a warm-up as the Bruins tweeted that McAvoy had deleted the log.
McAvoy saw 25:14 Ice Age.
Boston defenseman Hampus Lindholm missed his third straight game. He hasn’t played since being equalized in the Game 2 loss after a shattering shoulder-to-chest by Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov. Cassidy said Lindholm did not travel to North Carolina for Game 5.
THREE POINT NIGHTS
DeAngelo, who had three assists in Game 2, had another three-point game with two assists. Trocheck also had two assists while Teuvo Teravainen had three assists.
