James Earl Jones hangs up his cloak as Darth Vader – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) – James Earl Jones, who has provided Darth Vader’s iconic, menacing voice for decades, will not be recording new lines for new ones “War of stars” projects.

Instead, Jones’ voice will live on artificially through an AI program capable of recreating his voice, allowing Vader to deliver new lines of dialogue and retain the impressive bass sound that made him a widely feared villain, Vanity Fair reported.

Ukrainian startup Respeecher was tasked with creating a version of Jones’ voice as it appeared in the original trilogy for the most recent Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi Miniseries which takes place a few years after Anakin Skywalker became a Sith Lord.

Jones, 91, most recently recorded a cameo with the voice of Vader for the 2019 sequel The Rise of Skywalker, sound editor Matthew Wood told Vanity Fair. The actor has agreed to Lucasfilm’s plans to continue using his voice for Vader through archival footage and new dialogue created through AI for years to come, the outlet reported.

“He had mentioned that he wanted to wind up that particular character,” Wood told Vanity Fair. “So how are we getting on?”

Jones was involved throughout the process of perfecting Vader’s voice for Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Wood said, helping to assist the teams involved in recreating his sound and keeping up to date on Lucasfilm’s plans for Vader in the future stay.

Lucasfilm has previously revived the voices of certain characters through AI – the younger voice of Luke Skywalker in “Boba Fett’s book‘ on Disney+ was also refined by Respeecher. In 2016, Lucasfilm used CGI to recreate the visage of the late Peter Cushing’s villainous Grand Moff Tarkin for the prequel film Rogue One, although the character’s voice was provided by actor Guy Henry and not by an AI program.

Jones, a EGOT award winning actor, Vader has voiced since 1977’s “A New Hope,” though his role on that project was uncredited. Since then, he has provided Vader’s voice in every project the character has appeared in, from the original trilogy to the Star Wars Rebels animated series. He is also credited as Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi, although he did not record any new dialogue for the role.
