There’s never a good time for a clogged drain.
Dirt, hair and other debris accumulates over time and can prevent your water from flowing down the drain, often surprising you at the worst moment when you’re out of clog removers like Draino.
Whether it’s your kitchen sink or bathroom sink, a clogged drain can create quite a mess, and cleaning it up can be costly. If a pipe coil and clog remover is over budget or not working effectively, don’t worry, TikTok user and registered nurse Jamie Tutson has the answer for you.
Tutson, who goes by the name Healingjamie on TikTok, had had a clogged drain for months. She found a simple solution to avoid having to disassemble the sink after two cleaning attempts with Draino. A solution with inexpensive and everyday household items.
The first thing to do when clearing a drain is to remove all standing water from the sink, says the Killeen Daily Herald. Use paper towels if necessary.
After Tutson’s sink was dry, she squeezed dish soap around the drain at the bottom of the sink.
Tutson used Dawn Dish Soap, which is available for $1 at convenience stores such as Walgreens.
When the soap accidentally went down the drain, the registered nurse generously powdered baking soda on the same spot where the soap was poured.
A good baking soda like Arm & Hammer is also available at most convenience stores for under $1.
“As a base, baking soda dissolves organic compounds like dirt, grease, and other sticky ickies,” says LiveScience.
“In addition, the mineral structure of each particle of baking soda provides a gentle abrasive for cleaning without leaving scratches.”
Tutson then used a distilled white vinegar over the baking soda.
According to LiveScience, the vinegar and baking soda mixture “releases an effervescent carbon dioxide that cleans and refreshes drains.
A 64 ounce distilled white vinegar is available from Target for $1.99.
Tutson’s final step was to pour boiling water down the drain to remove any loosened dirt.
After waiting a few moments, she checked that it was working.
“My faucet hasn’t drained that quickly in months,” she writes on her TikTok.
Clogged drains can lead to aesthetic and structural damage, leaking pipes, bugs and costly repairs.
Most importantly, according to Art Plumbing, Air Conditioning, and Electric, it can lead to noxious odors and health problems.
“Remember that the ever-present odor has an impact on the indoor air quality of your home,” says Art Plumbing. “Skin irritation is another side effect that can occur if the constipation is severe enough.”
