“I’ve been shooting with one foot since I was 15, 16 years old working on my run”: Dirk Nowitzki details how he developed the iconic ‘Dirk’ one-legged running fad in Mavericks practice

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s jump over the bar is often considered basketball’s most unstoppable shot. But Dirk Nowitzki’s one-legged trademark is also worth mentioning.

Every legendary NBA player has a move that more or less encapsulates his entire skill set. You have Dream Shake for Hakeem. There’s Chris Paul and his elbow jumper – a point where he’s probably an ENJOY.

Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan have truly become legends when the two successfully put together a working jumpsuit. Tim Duncan’s bankroll shot might be the simplest signature move.

There’s also James Harden’s pullback, Ginobili’s Eurostep, both of which are crucial moves for today’s elite strikers. But perhaps the only unstoppable move of these is the one-legged fad popularized by Dirk Nowitzki.

The German No 7 entered the league and broke the archetype of how a powerful striker could play. We’ve all heard the term ‘straight forward’ before, but no one can define it like Dirk.

When Nowitzki made his shot, no player in the league had a more unstoppable scoring arsenal. Dirk can fill it from anywhere and against anyone because he uses his dexterity more than his jumps. Like Larry Bird, he knows how to use his opponents’ strengths against them.

Dirk Nowitzki broke the origins of the iconic Dirk Fade on Twitter Spaces last month

Dirk Nowitzki was duly inducted into the NBA 75th Anniversary Team at the start of the 2021-22 season. The German big man revealed how he started developing his signature snap on an appearance on Twitter Spaces:

“I’m trying to create a shot where I can always shoot – it doesn’t take much effort. I feel comfortable shooting off a leg. Since I was 15, 16, I’ve always worked with runners and hookers. ”

“So I always felt comfortable shooting a leg, and so I did it quickly. Honestly, I shot it once and it felt so good. And it doesn’t take a lot of energy, then I shoot it a bit more as part of my repertoire.”
