If the criteria for buying a new car are fun driving but no outstanding acceleration, cargo or children, environmental concerns, the latest technology, comfort or a quiet ride , serenity, buy Toyota GR86 2022.
Its only seemingly purpose is pure pleasure. The GR86 navigates the city with ease when driving, and it deftly navigates along country roads because that’s what it does best. For all practical purposes, the fun can be shared with no more than one passenger.
With a reshaped exterior, the GR86 is handsome and attracts a lot of attention. This is the first launch of the second generation of the car and comes after the car took a year hiatus.
Less embellished. Like the defunct Mazda MX5 Miata and Honda S2000, the diminutive Toyota coupe thrives on fun driving pleasure in a small package. It is similar to the Subaru BRZ and Scion FRS and is only available in hardtop form.
Offered in Base ($28.635) and Premium trims ($31,325), the GR86 is a two-door, four-seat sports car with a 2.4-liter DOHC four-cylinder, 16-valve horizontal liter, capacity of 228 horsepower. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission is also offered. The little Toyota gets a boost from 200 hp in the previous automatic and 205 hp in the manual transmission. A digital gauge display that can be reconfigured with Normal, Sport and Track modes.
With the larger engine, the GR86 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. It hit a quarter mile in 14 seconds at 101 mph. For those impressed by such vanity, a speaker amplifies the engine sound. Average gas mileage is 21 miles per gallon in city driving, 31 mpg on the highway.
An important touch: The GR86 includes a one-year membership to the National Automobile Sports Association, a performance driving class, and two years of free maintenance.
New standard features include LED front and rear lights, a digital instrument cluster that changes depending on the driving mode, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The simple designed interior is appreciated for its presentation. It’s like the charm of a small house – less is more.
The Toyota GR86 2022 also has a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and keyless entry with push-button start.
Upgrades of the Premium model were considered: an unnecessary spoiler, aluminum pedals, heated leather seats with suede cushions and 18-inch wheels. Eight or 10 speaker sound systems are available.
Adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights are equipped on the automatic transmission.
Lovers of small sports cars will appreciate Toyota’s character and driving dynamics. The driver and front passenger seats fit anyone larger than a jogger. The back seats are the following thoughts.
The ride is tough, especially at highway speeds. Every bump and all other imperfections on the road are felt. The automatic transmission is noisy and difficult to shift.
