‘It’s a sad day’: Grafton home vandalized after car crashed into it, causing major damage – Boston News, Weather, Sports

GRAFTON, MASS. (WHDH) – A home in Grafton was declared a “total loss” after an SUV crashed into the back of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

Half of the house was demolished Wednesday night while crews stayed on site to secure what was left behind.

“It’s a sad day,” said homeowner John McNamara when his 15-year-old home collapsed.

“[A] A lot of people remember certain days like your wedding or your kids or whatever,” McNamara said. “Well, I will remember that day when I was forced out of my house and I had to start all over again.”

First responders were seen at work at the home at the corner of Millbury Street and Providence Road just after 4pm earlier in the day

McNamara said he was just getting home from work to greet his wife when the car hit her house.

He said he and his wife heard a loud bang “like a bomb went off.” McNamara said he then walked to the side of the house and saw the car.

Firefighters had to cut a woman out of the Lexus SUV. Another woman, a child and a dog were also in the car at the time of the accident.

McNamara said he and his wife were not injured. Officials said one of the women in the car was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Thankfully everyone was properly secured and seat belts and airbags and everything did its job,” said Eric Mathieu, Grafton Fire Chief.

Mathieu said the child was properly secured in a car seat.

McNamara and his wife were soon told they could no longer live in their home.

“One minute, everything’s fine, and then how quickly your life can change in a flash, you know, just because of a car accident,” McNamara said.

Still, McNamara said he was aware Wednesday’s events could have been worse.

Mathieu shared a similar opinion.

“[T]It could have been very disastrous,” he said. “But it turned out well.”

The family could not recover anything from the back room of their home on Wednesday because the structure was not secure.

The cause of the crash is under further investigation.
