Arsenal legend Ian Wright has blasted Ralf Rangnick for not being sure Erik ten Hag was present at Manchester United’s defeat by Crystal Palace, calling his handling of the situation a “joke”.

The Dutchman watched at Selhurst Park as United were beaten 1-0 in a fitting end to a sad season.

Ten Hag is due to speak to the media at Old Trafford today but he was keen to see his new side in action on Sunday, although Rangnick wasn’t sure the Ajax manager would be in the stands.

The German also claimed he hopes to speak with Ten Hag but did not confirm if talks would definitely take place, surprising many listeners.

And speaking alongside Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker at Match of the Day, Wright ripped through Rangnick for his comments.

“To hear Ralf Rangnick say he doesn’t know him [Ten Hag] was there and said he was looking forward to it [speaking to him]”That’s a joke,” Wright said.

“It’s a joke thing, man. That’s just crazy.”

Supporting Wright’s comments, Shearer described the situation as “embarrassing.”

“It sums it up doesn’t it?” said Scherer.

“Actually, it’s embarrassing!”

Moderator Lineker ended the condemnation with the words: “Amateur lesson”.
