Is today, May 8th, 2023, a public holiday? | UK News

It was a weekend of celebrations in the UK – with the coronation of King Charles followed by the epic concert at Windsor Castle.
The coronation turned out to be the memorable spectacle everyone had hoped for, a celebration that was truly 70 years in progress as many people watched the first monarch of their lives be crowned.
But with all the excitement still in the air, can we keep the good times going? Is this Monday a public holiday and is it usually one?
Is May 8th a public holiday?
Yes! This Monday (May 8th) is actually a public holiday.
It’s an official bank holiday nationwide, with England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all having a day off to celebrate the coronation of King Charles.
Is today usually a holiday?
No, it’s a nice little extra freebie courtesy of the king who makes it a hat-trick of free Mondays this May.
Since the coronation itself took place this Saturday (May 6), this Monday was awarded to the nation.
In May we usually only have two public holidays – the beginning of May public holiday on the first Monday in May each year and the spring public holiday as the last one.
That will be next year May 6th And May 27, 2024.
Luckily we don’t have to wait too long for the next one this year. The spring holiday 2023 is coming up May 29th.
Coronation of King Charles III. At latest
The historic coronation of Her Majesties King Charles III. and Queen Camilla took place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday May 6 – with celebrations continuing into Bank Holiday Monday.
