The grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea will once again bloom with stunning floral displays this spring.
The prestigious annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show is back – here’s what you need to know about the dress code.
What is the Chelsea Flower Show?
The Chelsea Flower Show, officially known as the Great Spring Show, is one of the biggest gardening events of the year.
Organized by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the show is normally held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London.
Begun in 1912, the annual show attracts more than 150,000 visitors each year.
It’s also popular with members of the Royal Family, who usually attend as part of the RHS Royal Patronage.
Her Majesty the Queen is also a frequent visitor.

The show features cutting-edge designs themed around new-season florals, along with some iconic centerpieces like the floral marquee.
There are also some smaller smaller gardens such as the Artisan and Urban Gardens.
Four degrees of distinction are awarded in each of these categories – Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver and Bronze:
- flora Gardens and flower exhibitions
- Hogg exhibitions of trees
- Knightian exhibits of vegetables, including herbs
- Lindley Exhibitions of particular educational or scientific interest
- Grenfell Exhibitions of pictures, photographs, flower arrangements and floristry
In addition, Best in Show medals are awarded each year.
When is the Chelsea Flower Show 2022?
In 2022, the Chelsea Flower Show returns for five days from May 24th to May 28th.
There will be more than 30 gardens to explore, with a common thread of sustainability and the natural environment present throughout.
Highlights include a thought-provoking garden created by the London Fire Brigade on the negative impact of climate change, and four gardens featured in the new All About Plants category, each created by a new designer under the age of 40.
After a hugely popular debut in 2021, Houseplant Studios also return to provide inspiration for plant-filled living spaces.
Tickets range from £68.85 for members to £110.85 for public tickets, with discounts for the later 5:30pm slots.
The show is open from 8am to 8pm except on Saturday when it closes at 5:30pm.
Is there a dress code for the Chelsea Flower Show?
There is no official dress code for visiting the exhibitions, so you won’t be turned away if you wear jeans.
However, there is an unspoken code that is usually followed by most visitors.
For women, a day dress is considered the best attire for visiting the exhibitions, with floral motifs being welcome.
Weather-appropriate skirts and pantsuits are also popular.
For men, the preferred choice is a smart-casual dress code, including a collared polo or shirt paired with chinos and a light jacket or blazer.
It’s also best to leave hats at home – in contrast to other society events such as Royal Ascot, hats and fascinators are frowned upon because they block the view of the gardens.
As visiting the exhibitions tends to be an all-day event involving a lot of walking, the recommended shoe choice is flat rather than heeled.
As the UK weather is usually unpredictable, it’s also best to bring a waterproof jacket in case it gets chilly or starts to rain.
