IRS is revamping the Where’s My Refund tool to track refunds for the last three years

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – On Wednesday, May 25, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that it had added a new feature to its online Where’s My Refund? tool. This allows taxpayers to check not only the status of their refund for the current tax year, but also the two previous year’s refunds.

Previously “Where’s My Refund?” only shows the status of the most recently filed tax return within the last two tax years.

“Where’s my refund?” is a tool that allows taxpayers to track their refund in three phases; Return received, refund approved and refund sent. The tool is updated once a day, usually overnight, and gives taxpayers an estimated refund issue date once approved.

Taxpayers can use Where’s My Refund to check the status of their refund. within 24 hours of filing the return electronically for tax year 2021, three or four days after filing the return electronically for tax year 2019 or 2020 and/or four weeks after sending a return.

To check the status of any of the three most recent tax years, you can go to the IRS website or download the IRS apartment. You will need your social security number or ITIN, filing status and expected refund amount from the original tax return filed for the tax year you are reviewing.

You can also check this by calling the refund hotline at 800-829-1954. The information available to callers is limited to their 2021 tax returns. The IRS says you should only call them if: It’s been 21 days or more since your e-filing, It’s been more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper refund, and “Where’s my refund?” says the IRS can give you more information over the phone.

The IRS would like to remind taxpayers that an online account is the best option for finding their adjusted gross income, amount due, or other types of prior-year account information.
