Iron County Sheriff, deputies charged with criminal conspiracy

POTOSI, Mo. – Iron County Sheriff Jeffery Burkett has been charged with a criminal conspiracy that included a kidnapping plot. Two of Burkett’s deputies and an Iron County resident were also charged.

Burkett and Rep. Chase Bresnahan and Matthew Cozard are accused of helping Donald Gaston allegedly kidnap his children from their mother.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Department of Drugs and Crime arrested the four men Thursday.

Burkett, 46, was charged with knowingly participating in street gang criminal activity, conspiracy to commit Class A/B/C felonies or unclassified felonies of more than 10 years, attempted kidnapping in the first degree – facilitating a felony – inflicted injury – First degree terrorism, complicity in stalking, second degree stalking, obtaining criminal record information under false pretenses, abusing the 911 number and making a false report. He was jailed on $500,000 bail.

Bresnahan, 31, was charged with knowingly participating in street gang criminal activity, two counts of conspiracy to commit Class A/B/C or unclassified felonies of more than 10 years, first-degree stalking, second-degree stalking, Obtaining criminal record information under false pretenses and abusing 911. He was jailed on $400,000 bail.

Cozad, 39, was charged with knowingly participating in street gang criminal activities, two counts of conspiracy to commit Class A/B/C crimes or unclassified crimes of more than 10 years, aiding and abetting first-degree stalking, aiding and abetting in Second degree stalking and abuse of 911. He was jailed on $400,000 bail.

Gaston, 62, was charged with knowingly participating in street gang criminal activities, attempted kidnapping by parents by detaining or concealing the whereabouts of a child, conspiracy to commit crimes Class A/B/C or unclassified crimes over 10 years , first-degree stalking, second-degree stalking, and creating a false report. He was jailed on $400,000 bail.

Iron County is about 90 miles south of downtown St. Louis.
