LONDON (AP) – Sinead O’Connor’s 17-year-old son, Shane, was found dead in Ireland on Friday after the Irish singer-songwriter informed authorities he was missing.
Police said the missing person case was closed after a body was found in the eastern seaside town of Bray, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Dublin.
O’Connor posted on Twitter that her son, “the light of my life, has decided to end his mortal struggle today and is now with the Lord. May he rest in peace and No one will follow his example. My dear child, I love you very much. Please be at peace.”
Previously, the 55-year-old singer took to social media to urge her son not to harm himself. She noted that he had been hospitalized after two suicide attempts.
Shane is one of four children born to O’Connor. His father is Irish musician Donal Lunny.
O’Connor first rose to fame with a cover of the song “Nothing Compares 2 U.” by Prince in 1990. She comes from an abusive family in Ireland and has been candid about her struggles with mental illness.
