Ireland: Mom dies after car falls in river but sons swim to safety

A mother of two has died after her car crashed into a river in Ireland.
Primary school teacher Gillian Daly, 44, from Douglas, Co Cork, died driving off the quay in Cork at 8.45pm on June 3.
Her two sons, aged 10 and 12, survived and fled the car.
They were treated at Cork University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and shock and have since been released.
The car was later lifted out of the river with a crane.
A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí is investigating all the circumstances of an incident where a vehicle entered the River Lee at around 8.45pm on 3 June at Kennedy Quay in Cork City.
“Two children were recovered from the water and taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.”
Cork City’s missing persons search and rescue said they would like to offer their sincere condolences.
The group said: “Volunteers were assigned by Gardaí last night to assist in a multi agency search and recovery operation in the Kennedy Quay area where it was reported a vehicle had entered the water.
“We immediately sped to the scene to assist the Crosshaven Gardaí, Fire and Coast Guard and dispatched our boat, vehicles and sonar team to the scene.
“We pinpointed the vehicle’s exact position on the riverbed and the Navy’s diving unit recovered one person from the vehicle and also recovered the vehicle.
“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
