Investigations are ongoing into a fatal shooting in Margate involving police

MARGATE, Fla. – Officers are investigating a shooting involving police that occurred in Margate on Sunday.

Officers responded to the Northwest 1st Street and Rock Island Road area.

Working a few doors down from the drama, Sy Karim didn’t know what to think, but he told Local 10 News it was obvious trouble was on the way.

“All we heard was three, four shots and then all hell broke loose,” Karim said. “Sirens like crazy. Sirens, a lot of police action. It was crazy.”

It wasn’t long before detectives closed the Rock Island Road between Atlantic and Southgate Boulevards, sparking a full investigation.

Police opened fire on one person near the City of Margate Public Works Department at Northwest 1st Street and Rock Island Road.

Witnesses said that person was shot.

It is unclear what led to the violent encounter with police and what exactly prompted one or more Margate officers to fire their gun.

“Whatever happened, I found it pretty intense,” Karim said. “And the poor guy or girl, whoever it is, they’re not going home to their family and that’s sad.”

As with all shootings involving officers, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
