It’s time to say goodbye to the long-standing Internet Explorer browser.

Microsoft, the creator of the program, has announced that it will permanently discontinue Internet Explorer.

The tech giant has gradually moved away from the aging software, rebooting with the new Edge browser in 2015 to coincide with Windows 10.

The browser was originally introduced in 1995 as an integrated browser for Windows 95.

Here’s everything you need to know about the demise of the internet giant.

When does Internet Explorer end?

Internet Explorer will shut down tomorrow, June 15, 2022.

At that point, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will drop support for certain operating systems, according to Microsoft’s online help section.

It affects users with certain versions of Windows 10 client SKUs (version 20H2 and later) and Windows 10 IoT (version 20H2 and later).

The browser is not available on Windows 11 because Microsoft Edge is the default browser.

Microsoft announced last year that it would be retiring the company’s Internet Explorer 11 browser.

The last time the software received an update was in 2013 when Internet Explorer 11 was rolled out.

Why is Internet Explorer shutting down?

Instead of Internet Explorer, Microsoft is pushing users to use its new web browser Edge.

In a blog post last year, Microsoft stated, ‘Microsoft Edge not only offers a faster, safer, and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but is also able to address a key concern: ‘compatibility with older, outdated websites and applications’.

Can you still use Internet Explorer after quitting?

Despite the discontinuation, users will still be able to use Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Edge enables IE mode, which allows users to leverage technologies from the native browser.

IE mode supports all document and enterprise modes, ActiveX controls, browser helper objects, settings and group policies, F12 developer tools and all Microsoft Edge extensions.

When Internet Explorer exits, the app is not removed from devices as it is required for IE mode in Microsoft Edge.

What alternative web browsers can you use?
