Parents or guardians can keep an eye on their kids’ activities, including time spent in the app and who their teen is following.

It will even be possible to schedule forced Instagram breaks – handy for parents of Instagram addicts.

Meta (which owns Instagram) says the new features are rolling out in the UK starting today, so check your app to see if it’s available.

US users have had access to the new controls since March.

How does it work?

First, both the parent and the teen must have Instagram for it to work.

The process can be initiated by either a teenager or a parent, but both parties must agree.

It will be possible to track the time a teenager has spent in the app and set time limits.

These limits can be 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, one hour, or two hours.

And you can set scheduled breaks at specific times and/or on specific days.

The teenager gets a 10-minute reminder before the scheduled break.

Parents can also see which accounts are being followed by a teen — and who is following them.

And they get notifications about activities, e.g. B. when a teenager gets new followers.

However, access to search or DM chat history is not granted.

And it’s impossible to see posts unless the account is public or the parent is following it.

Teens will also be able to let their parents or guardians know when they’ve reported someone – and for what.

It is always possible to remove supervision (by either party), but both users will be notified.

And care ends when a teenager turns 18.

Turn on Instagram parental controls

To find the new feature, go to Settings > Monitoring.

Then search for Supervision Overview to invite a parent or teen.

It then creates an SMS link that the other person can accept, which launches the parental monitoring system.

Instagram says it worked with parents and academics to build the new system.

If you don’t see it as of today, try updating your app from the Apple App Store on iPhone or the Google Play Store for Android.
