The World Video Game Hall of Fame announced its newest members of the group on Thursday. The four “iconic” games are The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Ms. Pac-Man, Dance Dance Revolution and Sid Meier’s Civilization. The Hall of Fame said these games “impacted popular culture and the video game industry.”
The Hall of Fame detailed the impact each title has had on the gaming community and popular culture.
Ocarina of Time, which won multiple Game of the Year awards in 1998, was praised for its storytelling, sprawling 3D world, complex puzzles, and combat mechanics. Digital Games Curator Andrew Borman said video game developers today point to Ocarina of Time as influential in their work.
gave players more challenging mazes, smarter enemies, new challenges, and the first widely recognized female video game character, according to the Hall of Fame. “Ms. Pac-Man encouraged and signaled the expansion of gameplay across genders,” said lead archivist Julia Novakovic. The game marked a turning point in “the cultural conversation about women’s place in the arcade, as well as in society at large”.
According to the Hall of Famer, Dance Dance Revolution helped lay the foundation for other music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. “It was truly a revolution for the music gaming scene,” said video game curator Lindsey Kurano. “Music has been an integral part of human life since prehistoric times, so it is not surprising that East Germany enjoyed a unique popularity that spanned ages, genders and regions.”
The Hall of Fame called Sid Meier’s Civilization “one of the most influential simulation and strategy games of all time”. It was also named the best video game of all time by Computer Gaming World in 1996. The game offered players an almost unlimited number of choices that made each playthrough different and unique.
The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY houses the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was created to “recognize individual electronic games of all types – arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile – that have enjoyed popularity over a period of time and made an impact on the video game industry, popular culture, and society in general .”
Pong, Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Doom, and World of Warcraft were the first games to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
