This is the moment when a £68,000 futuristic flying car takes to the skies and completes its first commute.
Tomasz Patan, co-founder of the Swedish company Jetson, drove the Jetson ONE vehicle from his Italian home to a company building in Tuscany.
The company says travel has been reduced by 88 percent.
Jetson says the trip to the Santa Maria a Monte facility is a “significant event for the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) sector.
The aircraft is powered by eight electric motors, has a flight time of 20 minutes and can reach a top speed of 102 km/h.
It consists of a race car-inspired lightweight aluminum spaceframe and a carbon-kevlar composite body.
The vehicle is powered by a high-discharge lithium-ion battery and can carry a pilot’s weight of 100 kg.
San Sunner, Head of Communications at Jetson, said: “On May 21, after months of rigorous testing, the Jetson team completed the first-ever eVTOL shuttle.
“The team eagerly awaited the arrival of the Jetson ONE at the Santa Maria a Monte factory in Tuscany.”
Tomasz Patan, co-founder and CTO added: “Our long-term goal is to democratize flying. We firmly believe that ‘eVTOL’ is the future of mass transit. We are committed to making this a reality.”
“Like a Formula 1 car, the Jetson is built for the sky and is incredibly fun to fly. Most importantly, the flight stabilization system we developed makes flying super easy. We can make anyone a pilot in less than five minutes,” said Peter Ternstrom, co-founder and president.
Jetson says their prototype “proof of concept” was completed in early 2018 and has been working on a “consumer-friendly” version ever since.
They add: “All production for 2022 is sold out, but we are taking orders for 2023 delivery.”
Earlier, Slovakian company AeroMobil unveiled its AM NEXT, which it says is the “world’s first” air taxi and could be flying passengers around within five years.
Half supercar and half light aircraft, the hybrid model takes less than three minutes to switch between modes.
