In more favorable weather, a Wisconsin farmer rolls out several planters

A western Wisconsin farmer says planting conditions are finally good.

Shane Goplin and his family farm near Osseo, Wisconsin, and he says, “The planters are rolling, yeah.”

He told Brownfield he could start Friday, and by Monday afternoon Goplin was optimistic he could finish seeding with two planters by the end of this week. “Hopefully we’ll use up the alfalfa today before hopefully it rains. I have a planter that goes on corn. I would say for corn we should be about 20% planted at the end of the day. beans? We rely on beans for about 25%.”

Goplin says that after a cool, wet, and often windy spring, it’s good to finally get out into the fields. “This year there’s just been a higher level of anticipation or a higher level of fear or whatever with what we’ve put into harvesting this year, but it’s really just a great feeling to just put it in the ground and to put everything together.”

Goplin says much of his soil is rolling hills, so not everything is suitable for soybeans, and around 75% of his acres are corn this year.
