In a video that went viral, a Waffle House employee explains how the restaurant’s staff communicate customer orders with condiment packets and bits of cheese, bread, ham and pickles.

In a TikTok posted on Sept. 22, Magick (@magick_the_hippie) responded to a request from a commenter asking him to show viewers how “the spice packets tell [servers] the order.”

Magick guides viewers through more than 25 condiment configurations to communicate how someone would like their eggs prepared (using a jelly pack), what type of waffle they ordered (using bagged butter), and other orders. As Magick shows, it’s all about placement on the plate.

As of Thursday, Magick’s video had nearly 5 million views.

In a TikTok message to the Daily Dot, Magick said it took him “some time” to memorize all the spice placements and symbols.

“It’s like learning hieroglyphs for Waffle House,” Magick told the Daily Dot. “But it’s about repetition.” He said the system is taught at all Waffle House locations.

A Waffle House employee for nine years, Magick says he enjoys making videos about his job to give everyone a “look inside at how it all works.”

“That the videos I made really showed people the good side of Waffle House,” Magick told the Daily Dot. “We’re getting a bad one [rap].” However, Magick wishes the restaurant chain would recognize him for the videos he makes about them.

However, commentators value Magick’s insight into Waffle House.

“This is absolutely stunning,” commented @thatbeardedchefdude. “@Waffle House you guys need to give my guy a raise!”

“You have to train for a whole week to learn this,” wrote @delrose08. “My brain could never do that.”

“I’m not trying to remember this like I’ll be tested later,” commented @lovevictor98.
