A refugee who fled Afghanistan claims he faced death threats because of his license plate, which resembles the word ISIS.
Nouman, who lives in Ontario, Canada, says his life has been in jeopardy on multiple occasions because of the unfortunate digits 1S1S6.
The 26-year-old, who fled war-torn Kabul over a decade ago, said he didn’t pay attention to the license plates when he first bought the bike from a dealer last summer.
But after receiving multiple death threats and false accusations that he supported the terrorist group, he asked the province’s service provider, Service Ontario, to change his license plates.
However, instead of issuing him new ones, he claims he was turned away and vulnerable to renewed attacks.
“At that point, not only was my life threatened, but I was being mocked by a government worker for the same thing,” he told CBC.
“It puts you in a really powerless place.”
Nouman said he faced multiple physical and verbal threats while going about his daily business on the motorcycle.
He once claimed that a person insulted him over his license plate outside the city’s Metropolitan University.
And in May he said three men pushed him around outside a school, threatened him and yelled, “We know you’re a supporter.”
Fearing for his life, Nouman filed a police report and asked the authorities if the license plates could be replaced.
But his concerns were dismissed and he was told he would be billed £38 for the privilege of changing them.
“Yes, I could pay that amount to avoid something like this, but at the same time, Service Ontario is responsible for providing me with a set of license plates that won’t kill me, right?” he said at the time.
The motorcyclist is said to have only fulfilled his wish when a car almost drove him off the road.
Nouman claims it was a targeted attack motivated by his number plate, allegedly one of many over several months.
He has since blasted the services for ever circulating the plates due to their resemblance to the terrorist group.
A Service Ontario employee later agreed to change his license plates free of charge.
They also apologized and condemned the threats he received from the Ciphers.
