There are some styles that are very popular right now that experts claim will make your home look cluttered and dated.

Speaking to Insider, celebrity interior designer Cathy Hobbs shared the styles she would never have in her own home.

The pro, owner of home staging company Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes, advised against dried artificial flowers.

Cathy explained that plants – real or fake – can add life to a space, but dried flowers have an old-fashioned feel that could detract from a modern decor.

Next, she cautioned against being careful with your artwork.

Both framed posters and a gallery wall of smaller pictures can “depress” your space.

She suggested that for those who cannot afford original artwork, an inexpensive wall hanging or framed photograph would be a better choice.

She also explained that instead of adding value to the space, lots of little knick-knacks and accessories often just look like clutter.

Cathy suggested a few larger decor pieces, explaining that they would “ground your space without being a visual distraction”.

Next on the list of no-nos is a busy bookshelf. She said that although they are used for storage, it’s best not to overstuff them.

The expert even suggested leaving a few shelves empty for a chic, minimalist look.

Cathy is also not a fan of wall-to-wall carpeting and suggested hardwood floors as an alternative

She said, “The reality is that for many, carpet sends out a visual signal of ‘outdated.'”

The pro then aimed for brightly colored furniture, explaining that neutral is often the better option.

She said: “Rather than picking furniture that feels trendy, opt for ones that will stand the test of time. Gray and cream are great base colors when choosing key pieces like sofas.”
