Boiler Guide’s experts explained the mistakes that often lead to costly damage. A boiler repair costs about $400 on average, but if your boiler is more than eight years old, any damage could require replacement — which comes at a cost of $2,000.

Here’s what you can do to treat your boiler properly and save money and hassle.

DON’T LET THE HEAT OUT ALL SUMMER

You might be tempted to turn off your heating all summer to save on costs, but you risk a more expensive repair in the fall.

“Leaving a boiler off for an extended period of time can cause parts to become stuck,” explained the pros at Boiler Guide.

“If that happens, if you turn it back on after the summer, it won’t work.”

You don’t have to leave your heating on all summer – just turn it on a few times during the season.

DON’T FORGET POWERFLUSH

If you’ve never heard of a power flush, then congratulations! You’ve probably never suffered from the awkward rattle of a loud boiler.

During a power flush, a technician pumps cleaning fluid through the entire heating system to remove rust and scale.

This can be an expensive maintenance task costing hundreds of dollars, but doing it proactively should be less expensive – and it will help your boiler last longer.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR RADIATORS

Bleeding your radiators is another task that will protect your boiler from cold weather.

This releases trapped air, making your entire home heating system work more evenly and consistently.

With the central heating off, locate the vent plug on your radiator to drain the water and air out of it, and make sure you have a cloth and bucket handy.

Check the boiler pressure after you have bled the radiators as this process can lower the pressure.

DO NOT FAIL REGULAR SERVICE CHECKS

Annual boiler service is essential, so don’t skip it.

The technician can diagnose any problems and even report major risks like carbon monoxide leaks from gas boilers.

Plus, unless they have to order special parts, a technician should be able to make an immediate repair if needed, experts wrote at Boiler Guide.

Book 30 minutes in your calendar for this essential service to keep your boiler running.

DO NOT LET YOUR PIPES FREEZE

In warm weather, take on a summer project: Insulate your pipes.

“Frozen pipes can cause a lot of damage,” warn the Boiler Guide pros, “not just to your heating system, but also to your house if the pipe should burst.”

Insulation is inexpensive and should reduce your energy use and heating bills in the winter.

Don’t make the mistake of leaving your pipes as is and suffer from poor water pressure or even bursts and leaks when temperatures drop.

Take the time to tune your boiler this summer and enjoy a maintenance-free, warm and cozy home in the fall.
