dr Michael Mosely said you should incorporate these simple exercises into your routine every day to burn calories.

Regular exercise is good for overall health and well-being and can help you reach your goals faster when combined with a healthy eating plan.

To lose weight you must be in a calorie deficit, which means you must burn more calories than you expend.

On the Just One Thing podcast, he said push-ups and squats are the best choices.

He said: “I don’t think exercise alone will help with weight loss, but last but not least it improves mood.”

How to squat

No question, squats are hard work.

And the more physically demanding an exercise is, the harder it is to perfect.

The best squat technique means keeping your heels firmly on the floor and your torso slightly inclined.

But while squats will never be the easiest, only sit as low as you can comfortably to avoid damage.

Stand with your feet a little more than hip-width apart, then keep your hips back, bending your knees and keeping them slightly apart.

Next, squat – imagine you want to sit down.

Make sure your heels stay on the ground and your shoulders back.

After holding the position for a few moments, push yourself into your feet and straighten your legs.

dr Mosely said that squats not only help tone your muscles, but can also help improve brain power.

How to do a press up

The health guru said you should also do a resistance exercise like a push-up.

A regular toe push-up lifts between 60 and 70 percent of your body weight, compared to 40 to 50 percent for a knee push-up.

To do a push-up, get on the floor and position your hands under your shoulders with your legs straight out – like you’re trying to be a plank.

Then, once in position, lower yourself to the floor, chest first.

When you’re almost on the floor, push yourself back up and repeat the exercise.

Mr Mosely added that there is evidence that such training can improve your sleep quality.
