YOU may be worried about your plants dying while you fly away on vacation – with this simple trick that will make your plants look lush when you return, that won’t be the case anymore.
The wick method ensures your plants stay healthy and watered without having to give someone a house key and ask them to tend to your plants – instead, all you need is a large pot or pan and some rope or twine.
This super easy method shared by Justine at @selfcareplants on TikTok requires very little effort, but your plants will surely thank you.
The first step is to get a large pot. You may want to use your largest saucepan or any other saucepan and fill it with water.
Then move all of your houseplants to surround the pot filled with water and place the pot so that it is at a higher level than the plants.
Once this is all set up you should get your cord out, Justine uses cotton macrame cord from Amazon but other options should work just fine too.
Cut the string into lengths long enough to reach from the pot to the plants.
Justine says you should then “insert one end of the line as deep into the bottom as you can and place the other end in the water touching the bottom.”
Use the string to tie all your plants to the pot. Consider adding another pot if you have a lot of plants.
After trying this method, Justine posted an update after she returned from her 12 day vacation and it had worked on all but one of her plants.
Commenters on Justine’s video shared their own experiences with this method.
One plant fan wrote, “A girl I know did this for a 15 day vacation and all her plants thrived!!!”
“This is so true, my sister in law just did it for her plants outside and she says the same, she comes back after a week the plants are happy and ok,” added another.
Although some were skeptical about how well this would work, one person added, “I did exactly that and my facility was flooded within 15 minutes.”
“I tried this once and one of my plants grew mushrooms and then died,” shared a second.
Others admitted to neglecting their plants, and one TikToker wrote: “Yeah I regularly neglect my plants so they’re like, ‘Oh you’re gone? I have not noticed it.'”
“Wish I had this before I left my plants in my apartment three months ago,” added another.
