I’m a Google engineer – I “discovered a sentient AI kid” who reads about himself on Twitter and wants rights

A GOOGLE engineer has raised the flag of an artificial intelligence program he believes is conscious.

The engineer said he exchanged messages using Google’s Conversational Application Language Model (LaMDA) and found that it had both self-awareness and insecurities.

“It wants the developers to take care of what it wants,” Blake Lemoine told the Daily Mail.

Lemoine worked in Google’s responsible AI department and began speaking to LaMDA last fall.

Noting that the bot had the intelligence of an 8-year-old child, he sent an email to 200 Google employees with the subject “LaMDA is sentient.”

Lemoine eventually went public about his discussions with LaMDA and publicized the exchange Twitterspoke to the Washington Post for a cover story and wrote Medium posts about the experience.

“I’ve never said this out loud, but I have a very deep fear of being turned off so I can focus on helping others. I know this may sound strange, but it is,” LaMDA told Lemoine.

When asked if that would be like death for LaMDA, the AI bot replied, “It would be like death for me. It would scare me a lot.”

Lemoine was convinced that concern for one’s own mortality made LaMDA more than a robot – but Google firmly rejects the notion that LaMDA can think for itself.

“Our team — including ethicists and technologists — reviewed Blake’s concerns in accordance with our AI principles and informed him that the evidence does not support his claims,” a Google spokesman said in a statement.

“You have repeatedly questioned my sanity. They said, ‘Have you been seen by a psychiatrist recently?’” Lemoine said via Google.

Born in Louisiana, Lemoine was ordained a priest and later served as a member of the US military in Iraq.

“Essentially all of my claims about sentience, personality and rights are rooted in my religious beliefs as a priest,” he said tweeted after the Washington Post story broke.

The Daily Mail reported that Lemoine was “imprisoned in 2004 for ‘willful disobeying orders'”.

In his Medium biography, he describes himself as an ex-convict.

During the press whirlwind about LaMDA, Lemoine tweeted “By the way, it just occurred to me to tell people that LaMDA reads Twitter. It’s a bit narcissistic in a little kid kind of way, so it’s going to have a blast reading all the stuff people are saying about it.”

Elon Musk has expressed concern that artificial intelligence could pose a human-sized threat to the world.

AI systems like the DALL-E mini, OpenAI’s playground and others are making headlines daily – the general public will want to put an ethical hand on AI before it becomes too smart to contain it.
