Months of rain and cold weather have left many lawns overgrown and in need of some love and maintenance.

While the summer weekend and the potential heatwave just weeks away may seem like the ideal time to mow the lawn for many, there are five occasions gardeners should never trim their lawn, reports The Express.

When the lawn is wet

According to experts, wet grass leads to unsuccessful mowing – and not only leaves the garden looking unruly and uneven, but can also damage the mower.

When wet, individual blades of grass clump together and become stuck in the mower’s internal mechanisms, which in turn leaves a debris on the lawn.

But most importantly, wet grass also poses a health risk, as any damaged wiring lying on the lawn could project a current that could seriously injure or kill people.

During a drought

As Brits gear up for a sweltering Spanish summer, avid gardeners might be tempted to spend the days outdoors perfecting their green spaces.

But when the temperatures have skyrocketed, it’s best to leave the lawn mowing for another time.

During a drought, a dry lawn is already unhealthy, and shearing dried stalks will only damage the grass more.

During the lunch break

For many, midday is the perfect time to get outside and do yard chores before heading out on a date or night out.

But here it’s important to remember that the sun is hottest when it’s highest around 12pm, so people should wait until late afternoon or evening if possible.

The lawn is sick

Like any other organic entity, grass will occasionally contract a disease, making it a no-go zone for mowers.

This is because driving a lawnmower over a fungal infestation or discolored section will inevitably spread the disease to other parts of the garden.

Prior to trimming the grass, the priority should be to remove any identified infections from the turf.

After fertilizing

Although summer is now in full swing and we still have a few more months to enjoy the sun, some gardeners may want to consider preparing their outdoor space for the cold months ahead.

To support gardens until spring returns the following year, experts usually advise fertilizing lawns before the fall months.

However, once you have fertilized the soil and garden, do not start mowing too quickly as this will ultimately disrupt its beneficial effects and result in an overall unhealthier lawn.
