I’m a gardening expert – how to design a backyard on a budget that your family will want to sit in all summer

First-class summer weather is setting in and you should get used to it – at least in a cozy outdoor area.

When a winter of disuse and a spring of gardening has left your yard less than inviting, it’s time for an affordable makeover.

Luckily, the experts at Architectural Digest have shared a long list of ways you can improve your garden without breaking the bank.

These are the three areas you need to focus on to make your backyard comfortable enough to spend all summer outside.

LEAN BACK AND RELAX

The best way to get your family to enjoy time outside this summer?

Finally, if it’s almost impossible to get your family outside for activities because they’re too busy lounging on the couch, you can at least get them to relax on another sofa or lawn chair with some fresh air.

“You don’t have to start from scratch when designing your backyard landscape,” the experts explained.

Classic benches are easy to find, very durable, and perfect for entertaining guests, while standalone swings can be placed anywhere in the yard.

Or make an old-fashioned tree swing with a comfy seat and throw matching cushions on foldable lounge chairs for a budget-friendly outdoor living room.

And if you have a shady spot, turn it into the perfect spot for an afternoon nap.

“A hammock and a little walkway can turn an empty spot into a retreat for a cool afternoon nap,” the pros said.

SURPRISING ELEMENTS

When you spend time outside, away from the TV, you might want something that will pique your interest.

This is where elemental qualities like fire and water come into play.

Building a fireplace or installing a fountain doesn’t have to be a big expense, the pros explain.

Choose a fireplace with a simple design, such as a fireplace. B. a fire table, or a standing pit made of a steel or concrete pool.

Smaller accents are less expensive and can be safer due to the need to put out a smaller fire at the end of the night.

“The warmth of the fire means you’ll be using your outdoor living space earlier in the spring and later in the fall,” the experts added.

Your water feature could be an inexpensive solar fountain that is often lightweight and wireless.

Or, if you want to keep things really simple, buy a bird bath—or even a few in different sizes.

You don’t have to be a serious bird watcher to enjoy visits from feathered neighbors.

PLANT YOURSELF OUTSIDE

Where you place your plants can have a huge impact on your gardening experience.

Flowers and vegetables provide opportunities for all family members to engage with nature.

For example, if you have a hilly, sloping yard, add tiered beds that create “levels” and add interest to your outdoor space.

You can treat existing structures like a trellis by bringing home plants that add visual interest and privacy.

“Fences are very useful in a backyard – whether they keep things outside or inside,” the experts write.

“Disguise them by planting flowers or plants on them, which will help them blend in with the backyard.”

In noisy areas, bushes or flowers can also have a sound-absorbing effect.

If you’re looking for practical plants but a full vegetable hardening seems labor intensive, there are many options to start from seed.

Families who enjoy grilling and eating al fresco can plant herbs in pots or in the ground for a fun addition to patio meals.
