As temperatures continue to rise across the UK, it’s no wonder people are concerned about staying hydrated.
33C could be reached in some parts of the country and many of us are lugging around our water bottles.
In hot weather, staying hydrated is important as it can prevent you from suffering from problems like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
One way to make sure you’re not dehydrated is to check the color of your urine.
You might think that being on the correct H2O scale needs to be clear for you, but one expert has warned that this is not the case and clear urine could actually do you more harm than good.
dr Margaret McCartney said urine isn’t always an accurate indicator of hydration — or dehydration.
She said many health organizations have been pushing the link between urine color and hydration through charts — similar to the one above.
“This is absolute nonsense. In healthy people, yellow urine is actually a sign that your kidneys are working properly to maintain your fluids.
“If your urine is very clear, it means you’re consuming fluids that your body doesn’t need,” she told the Telegraph.
The guru added that all bodies are different and therefore require different amounts of water intake.
It also depends on your environment, for example the nature of your work.
But dr McCartney added that our physiology means we know when to drink water, and most people don’t need to measure their fluid intake.
Urine is mostly water and contains chemicals that the body wants to get rid of.
dr John S. Young, associate professor of urology at the University of Portsmouth, said the color of your urine depends on how much fluid is ingested and when.
He explained that a light straw color is best, not too light, not too dark.
If your pee is dark in color, this indicates that you are not drinking enough water – you are dehydrated.
When should I see a doctor?
dr Young said you should see a doctor if you notice a change in your normal urine color.
He said if these changes coincide with changes in medication, you should review the information associated with it to determine whether or not it’s an adverse reaction.
You should also consider whether you have eaten something new.
He added: “Otherwise, it makes sense to consult a doctor just to be on the safe side.
“Red, pink, or brown urine usually indicates something is wrong — although in most cases it’s easy to treat.”
Dehydration can cause fatigue, headaches and nausea, and can have more serious health consequences for the very young and elderly.
The effects can be both physical, leading to lethargy, and mental, leading to poor concentration.
Your body needs water to maintain healthy functioning of your organs, so drink your six to eight glasses a day.
dr Young said your urine could also be different colors due to certain medications.
He added that red or brown urine indicates blood in the urinary tract due to infections, kidney or bladder stones, cancer, or conditions like interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome.
If your urine is orange, said Dr. Young that this can be caused by liver disease or a problem with the bile duct.
