WHILE summer is in full swing, chances are you’ve heard your friends and family announce that they’re planning to lose weight for their vacation.

It can be daunting to put on a bikini and short shorts, especially if you’re not comfortable with your current size.

While it’s tempting to invest in the latest fad diet to lose weight or get fit for your next trip, one expert has warned against it.

dr Karolina Bauraitė said the high temperatures seen in the UK and Europe in recent weeks are putting people on diets at risk.

In the UK, the Met Office said there had been highs of 35C in some parts of the country.

The bariatric nutritionist said those looking for a quick fix are at greatest risk.

dr Bauraitė, who works at Nordbariatric Clinic in Lithuania, said the concern with rapid weight loss is that it usually requires extraordinary efforts in terms of diet and exercise.

She explained that many people could end up doing unhealthy things that are difficult to sustain if lifestyle changes are permanent.

“A lot of negative ones effects — including headaches, nausea, and dizziness — can result from losing weight too quickly, particularly when using starvation techniques.

“One of the main risks is dehydration. Ensuring adequate fluid intake is crucial.

“Sweating becomes more intense in the summer, causing the body to lose fluids, among other things.

“Failure to meet nutritional needs may also expose the patient to malnutrition or risk of malnutrition.

“Any time of year, it’s important to choose a balanced diet that supports health,” she said.

In general, she said rapid weight loss has also been linked to gallstones in the past.

This is because during fasting or prolonged periods of starvation, the liver produces more cholesterol for the bile and impairs the gallbladder’s ability to empty itself properly.

What to do instead?

You may be in the habit of trying a new fad diet every year, but numerous studies have shown that dieting often doesn’t work and that many people end up gaining more weight than before when they stop their diet.

dr Bauraitė said that you should aim for a nutritious, balanced diet instead.

“Maintaining a nutritional plan is crucial. It is recommended to eat balanced main meals and 1-2 pre-planned snacks.

“Elective snacking should be avoided, as snacks often mask thirst.

“Therefore, staying hydrated not only stops dehydration but also stops weight gain.”

She added that in most cases, diet should remain tailored to each individual.

One thing everyone can do, she said, is eat a diet rich in vegetables and retain as much variety as possible.

The expert added: “It is recommended to replace sugary desserts or soft drinks with fresh berries and fruits.

“Sweet and fatty desserts can cause unpleasant symptoms in certain cases, so it is recommended to prepare them at home and add fresh berries or fruits as an alternative.

“It’s also important to stay hydrated and avoid alcoholic beverages.”
