THE internet is full of lots of great home hacks, but you might want to avoid a viral dryer tip from a recent TikTok video
An appliance expert says household chore advice that includes a sponge and fabric softener will soil your clothes even more.
In an Australian TV news interview, Appliances Online pundit Colin Jones debunked a series of new viral TikTok hacks, including one using a sponge during the fabric softening step.
The tip claims to offer you a way to cut costs by skipping dryer sheets the next time you’re in the laundry aisle.
It was recently included in a post by TikTok user @hopehansborough.
According to TikToker, you can just use a sponge soaked in fabric softener instead.
While it might seem like a great way to minimize waste and save money on your laundry, Jones says you should avoid it.
As Jones explains, dryer sheets and fabric softener don’t serve the same purpose.
“Dryer sheets are used to remove static electricity from your clothes and add a fragrant smell to your clothes,” he said.
“Using a fabric softener sponge as an alternative to dryer sheets does not distribute the fabric softener evenly throughout your garments.”
The unevenly dosed fabric softener then leaves stains on the clothes, he explained.
According to the appliance expert, there are other static-reduction hacks that actually work.
First, the dryer’s “cool down cycle” can be used to minimize static build-up.
If you want to enhance the scent, put the fabric softener in the washing machine.
Jones says if you follow these two steps, you can give up dryer sheets.
