Managing a home takes time, energy and money.
However, one cleaning and organizing expert said there are a few ways you can reduce your energy use — and it’s really easy to swap out.
Caroline Solomon, known on TikTok as @neat.caroline, has shared her top eight energy saving tips to try at home.
Her first tip was to put as much food in the freezer as possible, as the freezer works most efficiently when it’s tightly packed.
It would also mean that you were leaving room in the fridge for air to circulate – thus reducing the amount of energy used to maintain and keep the food cold.
Also, make sure to close the fridge door every time you open it!
Most of us like to use power strips in our home as they allow us to connect multiple chargers at the same time.
But the problem is that we never think about how much energy they use.
Caroline said to save these make sure you turn off the switch when you’re out.
Your next simple swap involves the lightbulbs you use.
She recommended using LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs because they use a whopping 75% less energy.
Caroline also said that the temperature of the water you use to wash your clothes makes a difference.
Opt for cold water if you want to save energy.
While you’re in the laundry room, Caroline also said that you should consider skipping the dryer if you can.
Instead, hang dry clothes.
Though you might think your curtains don’t play a part in saving energy, Caroline said they do.
You should keep them closed in summer and open in winter.
“In the summer, 40% of unwanted heat comes through the windows,” she revealed.
You’ll be spending a lot less on your air conditioning bill if you just keep that heat from getting in.
Next, Caroline said that you should use the oven light to check on your roast instead of opening the oven door every few minutes.
“The oven takes more energy to heat up when you open it.”
And her last tip was about how to use the dishwasher.
“If it’s hot outside, use the dishwasher or washing machine late at night or early in the morning.
“This way you avoid overloading the air conditioner when you use it.”
