Speaking to Fabulous, he said: “Supermarket psychology is a very real part of store design.

“Most supermarkets put more expensive brands on an equal footing and take advantage of those who may be in a hurry to encourage them to buy the more expensive items.

“If you’re making a large purchase, look around the aisle as the cheaper supermarket own brand can be hiding either on the top shelf or at the bottom of the shelves.”

Richard also said tills are used to shut down shoppers on “impulse purchases”.

He added: “Tills are also known for seducing the impulse shopper in us, with tills covered in what’s considered essential and treats to encourage adding to our shopping cart.

“Sometimes supermarkets fill their tills with promotional offers to entice consumers to top up their weekly shopping.”

He also recommended the best strategy for keeping your grocery bill down each week.

Richard added: “To beat the supermarket’s attempts to get us to spend more, you should be willing to spend more time making sure you’re saving money.

“First, go to the supermarket with a strict list and don’t be tempted to deviate from it.

“When you’re looking for products on your list, keep an eye on all the shelves to find cheaper but similar products and good promotions or deals that might otherwise have been missed.

“Another tip to keep in mind is to look for products that are damaged and approaching their expiration date.

“If you show this to an employee and you have a valid point, the employee has the authority to reduce what is good for you.”
