He has a series on his account called “Random Grocery Facts” where he shares the knowledge he’s learned through working in the industry.

“To determine the freshness of the loaf, all you have to do is check the bowtie indicator,” Seon said.

According to Seon, the “fly indicator,” also called the “bread clip,” is the device used to keep the plastic bags containing the bread closed.

The ties come in five different colors that indicate when the bread was baked, Seon said.

Blue means the bread was baked on Monday, green means Tuesday, Thursday is red, Friday is white and yellow means the bread was baked on Saturday.

Wednesday and Sunday don’t have colors because Seon says no deliveries take place on those days.

“Another rule of thumb with bread. The freshest bread is below,” he added, gesturing toward loaves of bread on a shelf.

“Bread is turned. Oldest data at top, newer data at bottom,” read the text on the screen.

Seon says this is done to get rid of older stock as it’s easier for customers to get the product when it’s at the top.

The video went viral, garnering over 2.7 million likes and over 12,000 comments.

“Thanks for the info. If I go shopping I’ll keep that in mind and maybe explain my new knowledge to someone else. Thanks,” one person wrote

Other users warned that not all bakeries follow the color code on the ties, pointing out that it’s always important to check the codes on the bag.

“Bread ribbons come in different colors,” Seon said in the second part of the original video. “But it’s the same principle, it just says which days the bread was baked.”

He advises that people might need to do some research on their favorite type of bread to see if it shares the same color code.

So yes, bread bands vary in color. But the same principle applies.”
