I was told that the lump in my neck is just from a cold

A beautician was diagnosed with cancer just a month after a doctor told her a lump on her neck was due to a cold.

Paris Wells found a loose lump in her neck in March and immediately went to the emergency room at the Princess Royal Hospital in Orpington, Kent, to have it checked out.

The 28-year-old had also suffered from itchy skin and weight loss and was concerned after the discovery.

She claims a doctor told her the lump was because Paris had a cold the week before and that would explain the swelling of her lymph nodes.

However, within a few weeks, the lump was getting bigger and harder, so Paris got in touch with her aunt, who works at the same hospital, and arranged for a scan.

The results showed she had stage two Hodgkin lymphoma — a rare cancer that develops in the lymphatic system and spreads throughout the body.

Paris, from Biggin Hill, south-east London, is now awaiting the start of her first chemotherapy and has frozen her eggs if the treatment affects her fertility.

Today she said: “As soon as I noticed the lump the next day I went to A&E for a check up because I called my doctors and they couldn’t offer me a phone appointment for five days.

“The (A&E) doctor said because I had a cold the week before it was that.

“He also said it didn’t feel cancerous and I was sent away.

“It got bigger and harder so I had a biopsy with an MRI scan and a CT scan which confirmed it was cancer.

“Just because my aunt works in radiology, she got me an ultrasound. Thanks to her, I was diagnosed within four weeks.

“I chose to have my eggs frozen for fertility treatment and I completed that in May.”

Paris posted a video about her cancer diagnosis on TikTok yesterday, writing, “How I found out I have cancer.”

The video has since garnered over 250,000 views and hundreds of messages from people supporting Paris.

One said: “Send love, stay strong, you can do this.”

Another wrote: “I had Hodgkin Lymphoma in my neck, I’ve been in remission for almost two years. You have that.”

A third added: “Stay strong you got this.”

A fourth person commented: “After my son was born I found out I was in stage two.

“I’ve been in remission with my second baby for four years now. You have. It’s a hard journey, my friend.”

Paris has been raising funds for cancer charities since her diagnosis.

She added: “I walked the bridges of London for Lymphoma Action on May 22nd and together with my friends and family I raised over £4,000.

“I am currently awaiting chemotherapy to start with the Chartwell Cancer Trust which has been very supportive and I am also raising funds for them.”

Hodgkin lymphoma can develop at any age but primarily affects people between the ages of 20 and 40 and those over 75 years of age.

Around 2,100 people are diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in the UK each year.

Symptoms include weight loss, night sweats, persistent cough, and swelling in the neck, armpit, and groin.
