Three years ago, Sharon Clawson was repeatedly told she would never be a model – branded “too fat” for her dream job.
But now the 25-year-old, who wears a US size 14 (UK 18), works for top brands like Good American – the inclusive jeans company Khloe Kardashian founded in 2018.
The California model has been trolled and even told by members of her family that she wouldn’t make it in the industry.
But the negative comments only inspired her to show off her curvy body and pose for Ulta Beauty and Fabletics.
In an exclusive chat, Sharon says: “I’ve always wanted to be a model but my family said it’s unlikely.
“Growing up, I started to believe them because there was nobody in the media my height or my skin color.
“I started being a nurse in college thinking it was more of a stable job, but after four years I was working in a restaurant.
“But in 2019 I gave up both to pursue my dream. My old manager was sure I would come back as she assumed I wouldn’t make it as a model.”
Sharon signed with agency BTWN in December 2020 and the rest is history.
Since then, she has been the face of many cosmetics and clothing campaigns.
She says: “This route was scary for my family, but with things constantly changing, I knew there was a way to work around my weight.
“The industry needs people like me to offer diversity.
“It’s wild because I feel more confident being on set with size 6 models.
“It’s a reminder that I’m on set for a reason and they want me there.
“There is power. I thank the people who doubted me as they motivated me more than ever.
“I promised myself I would do what I love to do and I did it. I should do that.”
Sharon hopes her story will inspire other women to follow their dreams.
She said: “Women shouldn’t stop chasing their dreams because of their looks.
“The importance of representation is crucial and plus size women are needed.
“I hope my story will remind people that they have a purpose.
“I felt insecure for many years, but now I know I can make a positive impact on other women’s lives.
“I show women that you can do anything you put your mind to.”
