I spray tan with my dad

In 2019, a quiet residential street in London became the setting for a storyline that could have been straight out of a Neighbors script.

It was the middle of the night and a house caught fire. People were inside and quick action was required.

Keyword former soap crush Jason Donovan, who walks barefoot in his tight white pants and armed with a fire extinguisher across the street.

The 53-year-old became an overnight superhero after rescuing his flatmate from the fire, and fans shared the news with the famous catchphrase “Everyone needs good neighbors”.

It was the kind of feel-good news that makes a nation smile, but for one person, it was just their “typically awkward dad” — Jason’s eldest daughter Jemma.

“My everyday life is like, ‘Oh god, stop being so embarrassing, Dad!'” the 22-year-old actress tells Fabulous with an eye roll and a warm smile.

“I wasn’t in the UK at the time but it didn’t shock me to see him walking around in the newspapers in his trousers.

“It made perfect sense. He lives in his underwear. It wasn’t weird to see that, all my friends see him that way when they come to our house, so no, it wasn’t that shocking, it just made me laugh.

Talking about her father – who she calls her “partner in crime” – it’s clear to see the incredibly close father-daughter bond the couple shares.

The eldest of three children Jason shares with his wife Angela Malloch, Jemma was only 12 when she knew she wanted to follow in her father’s famous footsteps and try to break into the highly competitive world of acting.

“When I was young I tried to drop out of school, but my parents didn’t want any of it and insisted that I do my high school diploma – so I had to do it,” she says.

But with a father who has been in the business for over 30 years to support her, she didn’t have to wait long for her big break.

At 19 she jetted down under and joined the cast of Neighbors as the complicated and quick-witted Harlow Robinson (Scott Robinson’s great-niece).

Now – almost three years later – her story has Ramsey Street fans in suspense, as Harlow has returned to London to meet up with her Aunt Harriet (played by Amanda Holden) as she tries to uncover family secrets from her complicated past.

And guess who couldn’t be prouder of their eldest daughter…

“My dad cried a lot when I got the part,” Jemma admits.

“He’s so sweet and, as most people know, he’s not the type of guy to hide his feelings. He’s always crying, so it wasn’t really that shocking.

“He was proud, but at the same time he was being told that his child was going to leave home and move to the other side of the world, and for any parent, that’s pretty intense.”

But despite coming from a privileged showbiz background, Jemma hasn’t had it easy.

“The pandemic came shortly after I moved so I was stuck in Melbourne and didn’t see my parents or my brother and sister in the flesh for over two years.

“I think they were worried about me but I got lucky as filming went on so I’ve been busy and now that I’m home I realize they couldn’t have missed me too much because my bedroom was turned into a gym .

“There are weights in every corner of my room,” she exclaims.

And considering the firefighters said West End star Jason “looks good for his age” on that fateful night in 2019, doesn’t need Mrs Marple to figure out who the culprit is.

But it turns out that’s not the only way Jason keeps his good looks.

“We love drinking tequila together. We also like to play tennis and spray tan together,” says Jemma.

“We make appointments, go to the tanning salon together, get sprayed and both come out very orange, which is great!

“When we’re not in the salon, he’s always stealing my fake tan.

“He loves beauty products and men’s grooming.

“I used to get tons of comments about how moms of my buddies or fans used to have a crush on my dad and how he’s a hunk and it’s so funny!”

“My mother definitely runs the house at home,” Jemma adds.

“For example, if the loo flooded, my mom would fix it. She’s the queen of the house, my dad might be a hero in his pants, but he sucks at DIY!”

Despite all the ribs she gives her dad, it’s also endearing to see that Jemma also idolizes her old man and his years of accomplishments.

“He has an amazing work ethic and I was fortunate to grow up and see the industry through my father’s eyes. So I know there can be difficult moments, but I’m very privileged to have him supporting me.”

In 1995, after leaving Neighbors to pursue a career in music and the West End, Jason hit rock bottom at Kate Moss’ 21st birthday party in LA, where he suffered a drug overdose.

He later admitted that his drug addiction was so bad during this period that he took about three grams of cocaine every day.

It wasn’t until 2000 that he became completely drug free; the year Jemma was born.

Sadly, after 37 years on our screens, Neighbors will come to an end this summer after Channel 5 decided to scrap it from its schedule.

However, Jemma will continue to follow her dreams.

“The big dream is that I could do this forever,” she says.

“I love music too, so I’d love to do that too.”

Well, we certainly know someone who can help us. Hopefully not just in his pants!

Neighbors airs Monday through Friday at 1:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Channel 5.
