I put up a fence so my neighbors can’t see into our yard, but now he’s complaining that we’ve spoiled his view

A HOMEOWNER has revealed how they got into an argument with their neighbor after putting up a fence to gain some privacy.

Taking to Reddit, the man asked if he was an “asshole” for putting up the fence, fearing he had spoiled his neighbor’s view of their yard.

In his post, he explained that his neighbor has a small back yard but a fairly large front yard with a fire pit and patio just yards from his own land.

“I have always wanted more privacy in my garden as it is completely open all around,” he wrote.

“We are putting up a fence on the side of the yard that borders the neighbor’s small backyard and will be planting privacy trees along other parts of our yard.

“The fence helps with several things, primarily privacy, preventing our young children from running around to the front of the house or falling down a cliff near our driveway.

“My main concern is that the fence is 6 feet high and will block my neighbors’ view of our backyard, making them feel cramped.”

The guy goes on to explain that when the neighbor heard about the plans for the fence, he called the city’s building inspector – claiming the fence was too close to his property.

The Redditor continues: “According to the area inspector, our neighbor was more than dissatisfied.

“The inspector came out and found our fence is 5 feet from the property line – the minimum is 3 feet so we’re two full feet apart.

“When the inspector measured, he found that our neighbor had built a fire pit a few years ago, part of which is on my property, which violates the zoning code.

“I really don’t care and won’t tell the homeowners … as long as their fires don’t burn down our fence.”

He ended by explaining that he texted his neighbor explaining why the fence went up but they hadn’t heard from the neighbor.

Other Redditors were quick to reassure the man that he wasn’t an asshole, he was his neighbor.

One wrote, “If you didn’t want your yard to feel small, you shouldn’t have bought a house with a small yard.”

“To be honest I would report the fire pit as it is a strain on you and the fence,” added another.

A third commented: “How he built his fire pit on your land with no regard for you and it just comes across as hypocritical.”
