I planned my pregnancy around festival season – people judge me, but it’s just as important as moving or getting married

If you grew up listening to as many rom-coms as we did, chances are you saw life as a series of boxes: meet your soul mate, get married, have a baby, and live happily ever after.

Long before she entered the maternity phase of her life, Australian journalist Nikolina had her heart set on one final summer of worry-free festivals.

But then the pandemic struck.

In a personal essay for 9Honey, the soon-to-be mother-of-two explained how she decided to try for a baby the day Coachella 2020 was canceled — so she could hopefully make it a few years later.

She explained: “Now the decision to have a baby didn’t come out of the blue.

“When my husband and I got married, we always said we wanted to try having kids soon after we were married — but the rough timing would be around the two-year anniversary mark.”

After Nikolina got pregnant in April 2020, she explained to friends her “plan” to plan her babies around festival season and birthdays.

She recalled, “‘So you’re just putting children on your social plans?’ she asked me in a judgmental tone I didn’t appreciate.”

When she announced earlier this year that she was pregnant again, Nikolina’s friends and family questioned why she wanted their children the same age.

She continued: “My answer – because I wanted to celebrate my 30th with a plethora of cocktails. I didn’t want to be pregnant for it, and I didn’t want to have a newborn to take care of.

“That’s my honest answer and it sometimes shocks people to hear it. Something I don’t quite understand?”

If everything goes according to plan, the mother hopes to be able to spend her milestone birthday at Coachella

She added: “We plan for weddings, moves, holidays, financial decisions around family, friends and special dates – so why not plan for babies too? I would consider it irresponsible if I didn’t do it.

“My goals and desires are still mine and not just being overridden by my kids because ‘babies come first.’ No, babies come second, and when I prioritize my own happiness and check things off my bucket list, I’m not only a happier person, but a more grateful mom.”
