HE thought he was funny when he chose his dog’s name.
Instead of going for a “traditional” name like Rex or Spot, he opted to name his pooch Askim.
He hoped that if someone asked him his dog’s name, he could answer “Askim,” and the person would then turn to the dog and ask his name.
And while the man’s joke worked initially, it backfired when he moved to a new area and was asked his dog’s name by an elderly neighbor.
“I just moved to a new neighborhood with a great park, lots of dogs and very talkative regulars,” he explained in his Reddit post.
“An elderly lady asked Askim’s name.
“She said, ‘What?’ so I repeated myself and she turned to my dog and asked his name.
“I explained it quickly, but instead of getting the usual giggles, she got extremely upset and felt very humiliated.”
Since the embarrassing and embarrassing situation, the man has been approached numerous times by strangers at the park, who said they “heard about his joke” and “didn’t appreciate pranks at a nice family park.”
“This is a pretty tight-knit community and she looked to her friends for support, who just took her need at face value and confronted me about it,” he added.
“The truth is that I say the word askim several times a day.
“I’m aware the name was taken from a joke but for now it’s just a thing I call my dog.
“When I go out, I don’t look for new victims or invite people to be tricked, and I haven’t tried to trick them.
“It was small talk and I didn’t even think about it until I got a negative reaction.
“It has been pointed out that older people can feel very insecure because of their declining ability and I know from personal experience that this is very true.”
The majority of people in the comments agreed that the man had done nothing wrong.
However, some came up with other ideas for a reason he could cite for naming his dog Askim.
“It’s pretty close to aşkim (pronounced like ash-keem) which means ‘my love’ in Turkish – you could always tell people it’s named after that,” one wrote.
“I always thought you were referring to Turkish Aşkim (my dear) and didn’t understand how that was supposed to be a joke and/or an insult,” added another.
“I had to say it out loud to understand it.
“It’s harmless fun and nothing to upset a sane person.”
