I am a gypsy mother teaching my eight year old daughter to cook and clean for her husband and children

A GYPSY mother has spoken openly about training her two daughters, including her eight-year-old, to work in the family trade and become a homemaker.

Mum-of-four Claire, whose family includes Maddie, 12, and eight-year-old Bonnie, revealed she’s already putting them through their paces to make sure they can follow in her footsteps to look after their husbands-to-be and children.

As part of Channel 5’s eye-opening documentary, Here Come The Gypsies, Claire explained that as the girls approach thirteen, it’s up to her to put them to the test to see if they have what it takes, on their own to live.

In gypsy society, girls must first prove their ability to follow traditional family roles before they can move into a nearby trailer and stand on their own two feet.

Claire, who also has two sons with her husband, explained: “The man is going out and obviously he’s the breadwinner, he’s holding his family and it’s up to the woman to keep the family home clean and tidy.

“A woman’s place is basically at home in our community, that’s it.

“If I should ask [my sons] Matthew or Charlie to clean up, they would laugh in my face and say, ‘I’m not doing that, I’m shooting.’

“They know from a young age the difference between a man and a woman in our culture and what they do.”

And it seems Claire’s kids are more than happy to take the baton from their mother as they fast approach adulthood.

When asked what her hopes are for the future, the youngest Bonnie, who has her own chores to do every day, revealed: “I want two kids and a husband and I want to clean, cook and take care of them.”

Meanwhile, viewers watched as older sister Maddie took on the challenge of cleaning the house and baking a batch of stone cakes in just 60 minutes.

After completing the assignments, Claire said, “I think she ticked all the boxes. She is safe enough to cook, she can cook by herself without burning us.”

Claire concluded, “I think she has achieved her goals and is more or less ready to have her own Torah.

“She’s a good girl, she can do anything I ask of her, she knows how to do it all, so I’m really proud of her.

“I was raised the same way Maddie is now. Mom and Dad raised me the same way, so I was raised to learn to cook, to clean.

“It hasn’t changed since I grew up with Maddie.”
