(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Crews begin demolition of the 1300 East Bridge, which spans Interstate 80, to push the new bridge into place on Friday, April 14, 2023.
A section of Interstate 80 will be closed this weekend as crews work to replace the 1300 East Bridge across the highway.
The freeway will be closed in both directions between 700 East and Foothill Drive in Salt Lake City from 8 p.m. April 14 to 5 a.m. April 17. 1300 East itself will be closed until 5 a.m. April 21, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
(Utah Department of Transportation) A portion of Interstate 80 will be closed this weekend as crews work to replace the 1300 East Bridge.
During the closure, crews will demolish the existing 1300 East bridge over I-80 and push a new bridge in place. The new bridge was built alongside the existing bridge as part of Utah’s Accelerated Bridge Construction method, which UDOT says “reduces delays and traffic restrictions for motorists.”
Drivers in the area should use the I-215 belt route as an alternate roadway and also plan for severe travel delays, the agency said in a release. Other detour routes are available on the project website.
The 1300 East Bridge was built in the early 1960s. The new bridge will feature a 17-foot-wide walkway on the east side and a new sidewalk on the west side to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, UDOT said in a release.
