I-15 decommissioned near Lehi for emergency maintenance

One light pole fell onto the interstate overnight, and teams on Monday discovered several others were cracking.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Patrol vehicles block traffic in Lehi because I-15 is closed, Monday, December 27, 2021.

All lanes of Interstate 15 near Lehi were closed as crews performed emergency maintenance, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

The maintenance is centered around the integrity of some of the light poles on that stretch of interstate, said Geoff Dupaix, an agency spokesman.

Overnight, a lamppost fell down that stretch of road, Dupaix said. No one was injured, but Dupaix said the incident prompted an investigation into other interstate light poles in the area, near column 284 in Utah County.

When crews checked other columns between the Timpanogos highway and the 2100 North intersection, they discovered that four were cracking, Dupaix said.

UDOT closed all northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 around 12:30 p.m. so crews could safely remove the poles. Emergency maintenance will take a few hours, though Dupaix said he expects some lanes to reopen before the afternoon route begins.

Meanwhile, traffic is being diverted onto one-way culverts next to the highway until power poles are removed.

“We are doing the closure with a lot of caution,” Dupaix said. “When we identified these additional columns that needed to be removed, we wanted to make sure we acted quickly.”

UDOT checked other power poles in the area and found them to be in good condition, Dupaix said. Crews are investigating what led to the cracks discovered Monday so they can better understand how to repair – or replace – other I-15 light poles in the future.
