A huge fire has broken out in the fishing port of La Bajadilla in Marbella.

Flames and smoke billow over the Costa del Sol town as firefighters tackle the blaze that has broken out at the premises of the Marina Marbella boat company.

It is feared millions of pounds’ worth of ships have been wrecked in the huge fire and British boat owners are expected to be among the casualties if this is confirmed.

A local report, which has yet to be confirmed by officials, says about 100 boats between 20 and 40 feet in length were inside the warehouse-like building, which burst into flames.

British boat owners messaged each other via private WhatsApp groups last night expressing their concerns.

Police, firefighters and ambulances arrived at the warehouse in Marbella’s fishing port known as La Bajadilla near the city center around 7pm.

The entrance to the port was cordoned off but large crowds gathered as flames engulfed the building, which is part of Marina Marbella and believed to have been used for storage and boat repairs.

A spokesman for Marbella City Hall confirmed: “About 30 firefighters are working to put out a fire at a marine warehouse in the Port of La Bajadilla.

“Local police, civil protection and health services are also in the area.”

The city’s mayor, Angela Munoz, added in a tweet: “I am following the evolution of the situation following the fire at the Marina Marbella warehouse in the fishing port.

“No other building in the area is affected.”

The owners could not be reached for comment.

Marina Marbella was founded by two Swedish sailors who started their boating business in Marbella but are now operating in countries such as the UK and Portugal.

They offer a range of maintenance services including dry dock and winter storage.

Their other services include renting boats and assisting customers with the purchase and delivery of vessels.

A local Spanish report said the fire started in a building where about 100 boats were being stored or repaired

The report on ElDebate.com said: “There were about 100 boats between 20 and 40 feet in length in the warehouse. Many of them were worth millions of pounds.

“The building serves as a winter port where boats are stored after being taken out of the water and some have been repaired.”

The cause of the fire is unclear.
