But iOS now has a built-in tool to remove the background from a photo. It’s not perfect (yet), but it looks very promising. That’s how it works.

To remove the background from a photo in iOS 16, long press the subject of the photo with your finger. When the outer edges of the subject begin to swirl, tap Copy button that pops up. Now go to another app and tap pastethe subject of the photo is inserted without the background.

Before we begin, it should be made clear that this actually causes the subject of the photo to stand out from the picture. You can then paste the subject of the photo into another app like iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. and it will appear with no background.

So it’s not strict a Photoshop or Gimp replacement. But for quick snaps that you want to share in a text message, for example, this is a really handy feature.

First go to the photo in the Photos app and long press on the subject of the photo. When it starts to shimmer around the edges, a small menu will appear. Beat Copy.

Now go to the app you want to share the edited image with. I tried it in iMessage. Tap in the message box and select paste. The app will ask for permission to paste from the Photos app. Tap of course allow paste.

The subject of the photo is now displayed without the background. It is now ready for shipping.

If the iPhone background is dark, you probably won’t notice any flaws. But if you make the background white, you’ll notice a gray border around parts of the image. So it doesn’t do a 100% perfect job, but it’s close enough.
