Wetherspoons is now offering its customers the chance to win £5,000 as part of its Golden Straws promotion.

The pub chain hit the headlines a few months ago when it raised food and drink prices by 7.5% and boosted its all-day (hangover-fighting) brunch by £3 from £5.79 to £8.92.

But now, if you play a round at Spoons, there’s a chance you’ll pocket £5,000 if you find a golden straw in your drink – very welcome in a livelihood crisis.

So how do you find a golden straw, what drinks do you need to order and do all wetherspoons participate?

let’s find out

How to find the golden straws

First you need to order one of Spoons brand new Au Vodka Candy Rosa jars.

Described on the menu as “the perfect summer cocktail for a sunny get-together in a pub garden”, the AU Candy Rosa combines Au Vodka pink lemonade, Chambord black raspberry liqueur, Monster Ultra Rosá and lemonade – with a lime garnish.

If you get your hands on one, be sure to check the straws – if served with a gold straw in them you’ll win £5,000 – personally delivered by the DJ and Au Vodka co-owner Charlie Sloth.

Winners will be selected by Au Vodka, who will use a computer to select random pitchers at three Wetherspoon locations, three dates and three different times.

The person who purchases an Au Candy Rosa jar that is closest to the date and time of a participating spoon wins.

When do the golden straws end?

From now on, a straw will be released every month.

So, according to Spoons, “a winner could be found every month through September.”

However, the promotion is running in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland not the Republic of Ireland.

It also excludes Spoons at airports.

And there’s bad news if you’re in a Spoons in Beaconsfield, Leicester Square in London or in Windsor – they’re locked out too.
