During Queen Elizabeth II has been dealing with ongoing mobility issues, her son, Prince Charles, has performed many of Her Majesty’s royal duties.

The Prince of Wales, in his military uniform, took the place of the 96-year-old monarch at the State Opening of Parliament today, reading the Queen’s speech in her absence.

The occasion has caused many to wonder what title the prince will hold when he eventually becomes king.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What title will Prince Charles have when he becomes king?

The prince’s full name is Charles Philip Arthur George – and he could choose any of these four names for his royal name when he becomes king.

If he were to choose Charles as his royal name, it would be King Charles III as there have been two previous King Charles.

However, it has been speculated that Prince Charles might not be able to keep the Charles name due to the negative reputation surrounding his predecessors, King Charles I and King Charles II.

George could be a strong contender to be the future king’s royal name.

This is particularly because it could be used to honor Charles’ grandfather, King George VI and his great-grandfather King George V.

Charles also has the option of choosing Philip as his royal name to honor his late father, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Alternatively, he could choose Arthur – another of his middle names.

If Prince Charles chooses one of his middle names as his royal name, he won’t be the first to do so among royals.

The use of alternate names as royal names is not uncommon in the royal family, as Queen Victoria’s real name was Alexandrina Victoria.

Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI, was born Albert Frederick Arthur George Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. So, as you can see, when he took the throne, he had a lot of options to choose from.
