As The Platinum Jubilee celebrations are in full swing, with all eyes on Britain’s longest reigning monarch – Queen Elizabeth II.

While the current British Queen will undoubtedly go down in history as one of Britain’s most formidable rulers, she joins her ancestor Queen Victoria, Britain’s second-longest reigning monarch.

Queen Victoria, who gave her name to all things Victorian, reigned for most of the 19th century, a period of major industrial, political, scientific and military change as the British Empire expanded.

Here’s everything you should know about this formidable king.

How long did Queen Victoria reign?

Queen Victoria ruled for the United Kingdom 63 yearsmaking her the second-longest reigning monarch in England after her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II.

Victoria succeeded her uncle William IV as royal sovereign in 1837 after he died aged 71.

She was 18 at the time – seven years younger than Elizabeth at the time of her rise.

Victoria’s coronation took place a year later in 1838 at Westminster Abbey, when the young monarch was 19 years old.

Perhaps unthinkable in today’s world, the ceremony, which lasted five hours, was underrehearsed and a bit chaotic.

Few people at the ceremony knew what was going on; The coronation ring was painfully clamped onto her wrong finger, an elderly baron, Lord Rolle, fell down the steps during the procedure, and the bishop prematurely told Queen Victoria that the ceremony was over, leaving the young queen to return to her seat to see the coronation Service to the end.

But despite the confusion, Westminster Abbey writes that Victoria has recorded the day in her diary as “the proudest of my life”.

Queen Victoria was succeeded by Edward VII, who took office in 1901, 63 years after she had first crowned herself.

How old was Queen Victoria when she died?

Queen Victoria died of old age on January 22, 1901 81 after suffering a stroke and after being the only monarch many of her subjects knew.

She died surrounded by her family at Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight.
